Josephine Backshall Appeal
35 years after an Essex woman was found strangled in a field near Bishop's Stortford, the police cold case team are having another go at solving her murder.
39 year old Josephine Backshall from Maldon was killed in 1974.
Her children, who were 12, 10 and 7 at the time, are joining police in their appeal for new information.
Josephine's death prompted a huge police investigation at the time but no one's ever been charged over it.
Richard Moulder from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire’s Cold Case Review Unit said: “Cases such as this are never closed. Investigations continue and modern forensic techniques are used that weren’t available at the time.
“Thirty-five years later and the world is a different place. We are now urging those with information to come forward and speak to us in confidence. We hope that with the passage of time that people will feel that they can now speak to us about any information, however insignificant it may seem, and help to solve the mystery surrounding Josephine’s death.
“Whether you have already spoken to the police or not we would still like to hear from you.”
Josephine’s three children, Christopher, Sarah and Emma said: “Our loving Mother’s life was taken away from us when we were so young and we have endured 35 years of not knowing why, or by whom, she was murdered. Not only was she denied the pleasure of seeing us grow up, we now have families of our own of whom she would have been extremely proud.
“If you have any information, however small, we urge you to come forward and help the review team to put an end to the mystery surrounding our Mother’s untimely death.”
