Services for At Risk Children Inspected

Hertfordshire's services for At Risk children say they've made two big improvements following a surprise inspection by Oftsed last month.

Following the case of Baby P, the government's started doing surprise check-ups on local authorities across the country, to make sure the process of noticing kids who need help is working.

Inspectors found "agencies work well to safeguard children" and assessments "lead to effective plans to support children and young people".

However, there were areas where it was felt the team could improve. The inspectors picked up a backlog of cases and gave them seven days to make changes to the contact centre for people to report a problem.

The County Council have told us social workers brought the backlog up to date within one weekend and that they've helped put together a team to handle the increase in calls to the contact centre.

Jane Pitman, Executive Member for Children's Services, said: "We are pleased that Ofsted has highlighted our strengths, which reflect the hard work of our staff in raising the standards of social care in the past two years. However, we also recognise that there is room for further improvement."
