£1.2m for community

Over the next four years Essex county council plan to spend one point two million pounds on projects to improve local communities - and they're letting us decide where it goes.

Each district in the county will be offered 100 thousand pounds.

How does it work?

During 2009/10 the fund will award three grants to the districts of Harlow, Castle Point and Tendring
Specific wards in each of the three districts are eligible to apply, these are as follows:

Castle Point Borough – Thundersley (St. George’s, St. Peter’s and Cedar Hall wards)
Harlow District – Church Langley and Potter Street wards
Tendring District – Walton ward

Community groups have until the 31st December 2009 to submit bids

All submissions will then be put to an independent judging panel will draw up a shortlist of finalists for each district
Once the finalists have been selected they will then be subject to a public ballot – with every household in the selected wards being eligible to vote

The project with the most votes in each district gets the cash

County Councillor John Jowers, Cabinet Member for Localism and Planning commented: “It is my greatest pleasure to declare the 2009/10 round of The People’s £100k Community Chest open. This fund will empower residents to make decisions as to where and how money should be spent in their local area as well as creating a legacy of real and lasting benefit to the whole community. I’m very much looking forward to receiving the bids in the coming months.”
